This little gem has everything you will need for FM operation and it also has power to spare.I've been running this radio for 8 months or so. With my home made copper pipe J-pole mounted only sixteen feet in the air I can hit repeaters as far away as New Orleans from my Mobile, AL home. This isn't entirely due to the power either as I never need the full 75 watts. In fact, I have pumped it up to full only once! Receive is exceptionally clear as well. I am new to amateur radio so I didn't want to spend $400 for a dual-band HT. The UVF1 performs well and for the money it is an excellent buy. I have been getting good signal reports on most repeaters in the area.Pros- The price is awesome. Dual-band and Dual display. Comes with cable and software Easy to switch between programmed channels and ad-hoc frequency entry. You can listen to any frequency from 87-108Mhz FM Broadcast Receives 136-174Mhz & 390-520Mhz. Transmits 144-148Mhz & 430-450Mhz. 5W/4W output w/1W low setting. Drop-in Charger. Cons- You will need the cable and software to get to all the options. The software is pretty flaky. She was unfamiliar with handheld radios. The radio is not a true dual band. It can switch between both bands however they must be on the same transmit & receive channels to talk. Programming is rather difficult however the speech does confirm each key as it is pressed I think the software and cable would be a great help for programming faster and more accurately . The manual is very difficult to understand however if you are familiar with other handhelds it can be figured out. That is why I have ordered the software and cable for her to assist in the programming. Overall for the value the radio works well and as claimed, we have been able to hit the local repeaters with no problems. The delivery was extremely fast and the seller has been excellent in helping out with the radio. You really need to program the channels from a computer. I spent the extra money to get a USB programming cable to match, and downloaded the programming software from one of the user groups. From what I read it was worth getting the genuine cable. Some others commented they bought cheaper versions that turned out not to be compatible with the USB drivers.I do like the voice prompts... you can use it in the dark, or one-handed without looking at it.
